GM dodges tariffs with $5 billion production shift to US from Mexico

Summary: General Motors plans to invest $4 billion in its US plants over the next two years to boost production of several top-selling models, including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pick-up trucks and the Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle. This move will shift production from Mexico to the US, adding between 3,000 and 4,000 US jobs and reducing the company’s reliance on Mexican factories. The shift is a response to President Trump’s tariffs, which have upended the economics of automobile manufacturing and prompted GM to seek ways to mitigate its estimated $5 billion exposure to these tariffs.
